PROFESSIONAL MOVES: Discussion Groups

Attendees will have the opportunity to attend 2 of the following discussion groups:

Board Work: The Importance of Getting Involved

Facilitator: Shuba Maniram || Board Chair, College Access Consortium of New York (CACNY)

Are you curious about the opportunities that exist for professional growth outside of your 9 to 5? Wondering what committee or board work entails? In this presentation we will go over what it means to take on leadership positions and what roles exist for you to become involved in the larger College Access and Admissions community. Finding ways to get involved may seem like it is extra work, but it doesn't have to be. There are many benefits and exposure in leadership roles and we want to share some tips and answer questions!

Started in Admissions, Now I'm Here

Facilitators: Andrew "Drew" Curiel || Director for the Center of Leadership, University of  Mount Saint Vincent
Nicholas Jones || Executive Director of Enrollment Management, York College CUNY

Oh! The Places You Will Go! From an entry-level, through middle management, to executive status, where the road from admissions can lead you.

Showing vs. Telling: What Your Words Say About Your Management Style

Facilitator: Courtney Camacho || Nonprofit and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Consultant, Camacho Consulting

Research has shown that inclusive work environments retain employees at 5.4 times higher rates than those that do not, and one medium of inclusion we don’t talk about enough is language. This workshop will evaluate key phrases and terms we commonly use in the college access and success space, and how it can affect who feels included, valued, and seen in the workplace (and in program). Attendees will leave this session with deeper insight on how language affects team dynamics, as well as key terms/phrases to integrate into practice.

    Scaffolding Solo-preneurship

Facilitators: Ibro Badji || Consultant, Good Vibes Uni
Amber Peters || Consultant, On Track With Mizz P

So you're ready to be a consultant? How do you choose to work for yourself and embrace an entrepreneurial spirit?

      ANDREW CURIEL

Andrew Curiel is a 26 year old Bronx Native who attended elementary, high school, and college right here in the borough. As an only child raised by his mother & grandmother, Andrew took a liking to sports and participated in baseball & basketball throughout his life. From winning city championships in both sports during his junior year, Drew learned the importance of hard work and when applied correctly, anything could be accomplished.

During his time at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Drew was a four year member of the men’s basketball team, participated as a two year Orientation leader, was the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President and most notably created his own non-profit organization. The Be You Stay True Program is a youth-based program that promotes character building through basketball. As a Business Administration major, Drew took what he was learning from  his professors and applied it directly to his growing program. To this date, Drew has served nearly 700 children through his program.

From teaching, mentoring, and guiding the youth Drew applied and was then selected as Victory Scholar for the Sport Changes Life Program. This is an Irish based program which selects 30 student-athletes across NCAA Divisions I, II, and III to pursue a masters degree, play professional basketball, and participate in community service. While in his placement university, Drew became a leader hosting basketball camps for the community and becoming a captain on his college basketball team. He ended his time in Ireland with a college basketball championship, a Masters Degree in Marketing & Management Strategy, and a fresh new perspective on life!

Upon his return to America, Drew received a job offer from his Alma mater, the College of Mount Saint Vincent as an Assistant Director for Admission. He quickly grasped his responsibilities serving students in Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island. While also maintaining the brand of the college on social media, Drew captured the attention of students nationwide by telling the stories and successes of current Mount Students. Within 14 months, Drew was promoted to Associate Director for Admission and then Senior Associate Director for Admission.

In February 2023, Drew transitioned to serve as the Director of the Center for Leadership at UMSV. As one of the youngest in his industry Drew empowers and encourages his student leaders to lead both in and out the classroom.

During his off time Drew continues to serve the youth within the Bronx organizing his annual summer BYST basketball camps, college essay workshops, and fulfilling his why– which is to improve the people and places he interacts with better than when he first came in contact with them.
