About CACNY

The College Access Consortium of New York (CACNY) was created in 1989 as an informal network of community-based organizations (CBOs) involved in helping New Yorkers get into college and apply for financial aid.

Meeting once a month, the people who provided this help would swap information about individual colleges and their admissions requirements, new scholarships being offered by private companies, openings for SAT prep courses, strategies for counseling students, and other subjects that enabled them to better serve their students. In its earlier years, most CACNY members were programs from some of the City's venerable Settlement Houses.

In 1995, CACNY members decided to reach out to colleges, high schools and other CBOs to expand the network and diversify membership. College admissions officers, high school college advisors and education program directors from CBOs throughout the City responded to the invitation enthusiastically and joined CACNY, seeking collaboration in the common goal of helping improve access for New York City residents to higher education.

A year later, the membership agreed to pay dues and CACNY grew to include a monthly newsletter, annual events for students and families, college trips for students, and a scholarship of its own.

To date, over 100 schools, colleges, and community-based organizations belong to College Access Consortium of New York.
